Debunking Common Myths About Bowen Therapy for Dogs

As someone who has worked with dogs for years, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that Canine  Bowen Therapy can have on their well-being. But I also hear a lot of misconceptions about it. Many pet parents are curious but hesitant, often because they’ve heard myths that make them question whether Canine Bowen Therapy is right for their dog. Let’s clear up some of the most common misunderstandings.

Myth #1: “Bowen Therapy is just a fancy massage.”

I hear this one all the time! While Bowen Therapy does involve hands-on techniques, it is very different from a massage. Massage focuses on manipulating muscle tissue to release tension, whereas Bowen Therapy works with the body’s fascia (connective tissue) to encourage self-healing.

Each Bowen move is precise and targeted, stimulating the nervous system to reset and restore balance.I  use gentle movements over specific points, with short pauses between sets. These pauses allow the dog’s body to process the changes, reducing pain, improving mobility, and enhancing overall well-being. Unlike massage, which works through direct pressure, Bowen prompts the body to adjust itself in a more lasting way.

Myth #2: “Only senior dogs or those with injuries need therapy.”

While Bowen Therapy is fantastic for senior dogs and those recovering from injuries, it’s just as beneficial for young and active dogs. Many pet parents bring their dogs in for sessions to help with:

  • Anxiety & Stress: Dogs, like humans, store tension in their bodies. Bowen helps them relax, making it particularly useful for nervous or reactive dogs

  • Digestive Issues: The therapy works on the vagus nerve, which plays a role in digestion. Some dogs experience improved digestive health after sessions

  • Mobility & Posture: Even if your dog isn’t “injured,” they might have muscle imbalances from daily activities like jumping on furniture or running on hard surfaces. Bowen Therapy helps maintain good posture and movement, preventing long-term issues.

Think of Bowen as part of proactive care—helping dogs stay comfortable and healthy rather than waiting for problems to appear.

Myth #3: “If my dog isn’t limping or in visible pain, they don’t need this.”

Pain in dogs is not always obvious. In fact, they are experts at masking discomfort—it’s a survival instinct. Some signs that your dog might be in pain (even if they’re not limping) include:

  1.  Reluctance to jump, climb stairs, or play

  2.  Changes in posture, stiffness, or an arched back

  3.  Excessive licking of a particular area (a way of self-soothing pain)

  4.  Sudden behavioral changes like irritability or withdrawal

  5.  Yawning or lip licking when being touched in a specific area

I would like to see more dogs come in for preventive care, as I can often uncover areas of tension their owners weren’t even aware of.

Myth #4: “Alternative therapies take forever to show results.”

I understand the concern—no one wants to wait endlessly for their dog to feel better. The good news? Many dogs show noticeable improvement after just one or two sessions.Of course, every dog is different. Some respond immediately, while others need a few sessions to see lasting changes. But in most cases, pet parents report:

  • Increased energy and mobility

  • Better sleep and relaxation

  • Reduction in stiffness or pain-related behaviours

For chronic conditions, regular sessions provide cumulative benefits, helping dogs maintain a better quality of life over time.

Myth #5: “This sounds nice, but is it backed by science?”

Yes! Bowen Therapy is based on fascial research and neurophysiology. Fascia is a connective tissue network that plays a crucial role in movement and pain perception. When fascia becomes restricted (due to injury, stress, or poor posture), it affects the entire body.

Scientific studies on fascia release, proprioception, and nervous system regulation support the principles behind Bowen Therapy. Additionally, Bowen is widely used in human rehabilitation and sports therapy, with proven results in reducing pain and improving mobility.

But the best proof? The dogs themselves. I’ve seen dogs regain movement, relax deeply after sessions, and bounce back from injuries much faster than expected.

Final Thoughts

Bowen Therapy isn’t magic—it’s a structured, science-backed approach that helps dogs feel their best. Whether your dog is a senior needing support, an active pup with muscle tension, or just in need of general wellness care, Bowen Therapy can play a valuable role in their health journey.
